What is a blog?
You must have heard the term “blog” somewhere or from someone,
and you’re probably thinking what it’s all about. Let’s make this
clear, when I was in high-school, then college, a lot of people talked about “blogs” and
“blogging” and about "subscribing" to certain blogs, but I never knew exactly what it was. I had absolutely no
idea about what a blog is or what do people do there. But many years have passed since then, and fortunately I've had the chance to co-own and maintain a blog since the last few years, and I think I have enough knowledge that I can share with someone who's interested to be a blogger in the recent future.
Before I try to give you an in-depth explanation of blogs and blogging, let’s see some definitions for that:
According to Wikipedia (since we all use that specific website almost every time for knowing something that we don't know), "A blog (a truncation of the expression "weblog") is a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries ("posts"). Posts are typically displayed in reverse chronological order, so that the most recent post appears first, at the top of the web page.."
I've seen some successful bloggers say that "a blog is like their personal diary where they write (type) their words or they keep track of their daily activities and whatnot and they are saved in reverse chronological manner.."
The word "blog" is short for "weblog" or "web log" so that should be clear that it is "a log maintained by you which is saved in the form of a website over the internet".
If you check the meaning of the word blog in Harvard Law School website : 👇
I am sure that you must be following some blog or blogs, intentionally or even unintentionally, and come closer, I'll whisper a secret in your ears, "what you are reading right now is a blog". 😆
Different types of blogs :
There are no such "official rule book of blogs" where you can easily differentiate between different types of blogs, neither can you categorize them. But unofficially there are few types of blog such as:
- Single author blogs : These types of blogs are usually owned and maintained by individuals or a small group of people, hence the name.
- MAB : If there are single author blogs, there has to be blogs which are maintained by multiple users right? Right! Since the 2010s, "Multi-Author Blogs" (MABs) have developed, with posts written by large numbers of authors and sometimes professionally edited.
- Microblogging : Microblogging is the practice of posting small pieces of digital content—which could be text, pictures, links, short videos, or other media—on the Internet. Microblogging offers a portable communication mode that feels organic and spontaneous to many users. You must be knowing names of some microblogging sites or apps, like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WeiBo, etc.
- Corporate blogs : Blogs are also maintained by organisations and non-profit organisations used internally only for their employees. These are called Corporate Blogs.
- These are different types of blogs on the basis of their genre like political blogs, journalism blogs, fashion blogs, health blogs, DIY blogs, lifestyle blogs, photography blog, art blogs, education blogs or edublogs, and the list goes on and on.
- Can you believe that there's also a thing called moblog which is a blog maintained by your mobile phones or smartphones only.
How to get people to read your blog?
These days almost everyone is hooked up on numerous social networking sites, and the bloggers share the URL/link of their entire blog or a specific post on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc in order to get more viewers which leads to more traffic which eventually leads to more money. See, I suddenly have your attention. It's okay, I don't blame you. I'll talk to you about that later, how to make money from your blog posts with almost zero financial investment. All you need to do is chase your dream of being a serious blogger and never ever give up on your dream. Just keep posting stuff and keep sharing the URL of that post in several social media platforms, that's all it takes.
So I guess that's all for now. I'll see you tomorrow with a new post about something else.
Take care,
Have fun,
Stay healthy and drink lots of water.
😜
Oh ! And thanks a lot for checking out this blog, subscribe or comment not only because I'd absolutely love that but also because it's cool to subscribe to a blog.
