What is G Suite?


According to Wikipedia, "G Suite (formerly Google Apps for Work and Google Apps for Your Domain) is a brand of cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tools, software and products developed by Google, first launched on August 28, 2006 as "Google Apps for Your Domain". G Suite comprises Gmail, Hangouts, Calendar, and Google+ for communication; Drive for storage; Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and Sites for collaboration; and, depending on the plan, an Admin panel and Vault for managing users and the services." If that was difficult for you to understand, then G Suite is a suite (collection) of web applications created by the one and only Google, keeping in mind the professionals and businesses.


G Suite is undeniably one of the most popular cloud based suite of applications currently available and most professionals and consumers alike are already very familiar with many of its awesome offerings like Gmail, Hangouts, Calendar, Drive, Docs, and Sheets among others. Most of these core services are free for consumers. However, G Suite does offer enterprise grade solutions to suit just about every business need. G Suite has gone through many remarkable transformation through the years, but to understand that, it is very important to understand it's origins.

From Google Apps to G Suite


Google initially launched their cloud computing platform in 2006 using the moniker "Google Apps for Your Domain" around the same time when web applications & cloud services really started gaining momentum among users. Google Apps originally offered cloud-based alternatives to Microsoft's solutions that were already popular among users. Google’s original core services included apps like Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sites, Groups, and Chat. Although over the years, the list kept on increasing and increasing as Google has added a huge list of additional services and enhancements to their core offering to compete with legacy and cloud solutions from their competitors, primarily Microsoft Office 365.

In 2016, Google officially announced Google Apps for Work would be rechristened as G Suite with a few more applications added to it's purse. Now, G Suite currently offers over fifty web-based applications and services, and is part of a much larger Google Cloud Platform offering powerful services for organizations like Google Compute Engine.

What is G Suite now? What has it become?

 What is G Suite today? Today, G Suite offers solutions and utilities, if I may say so, to a typical organization’s connectivity and productivity needs, as I have already said, which have made it possible for many organizations to eliminate the need for on-prem infrastructure at large. The benefits for organizations' perspective include reduced cost, maintenance and implementation, and management overhead.

G Suite has become such a successful and comprehensive platform that Google is chasing the dream of Microsoft’s lock-in strategy, which was evident with their creation of Google Cloud Identity, which effectively detached G Suite user identities from working only with G Suite. Those identities now work across a much wider range of Google services. Google did this to create a user management system for their services in which IT admins can connect G Suite users to Google resources. In doing so, organizations no longer needed to manage Google apps independently. Instead, Google administrators can use Google’s identity management service to provision Google services to their users on an individual basis. That comes very very handy when you are dealing with a large number of people, like they do, so team-work and collaboration becomes a lot easier.

Reception of G Suite :

Let's see what some of the tech-pundits has said about G Suite. These are taken from different sources for your information only.
  • Gary Marshall of TechRadar commented in 2016 that "Where Office tries to do everything imaginable, Google's suite is much more basic. That said, it's much more powerful than it was when the package debuted in 2006, but the emphasis on simplicity and speed remains." Marshall wrote that "We wouldn't want to craft a massive, complicated manuscript in Docs, but then that isn't what Docs is designed to do. It's a fast and user-friendly way to create everyday documents and to share them with colleagues and clients", and that fellow service Google Sheets "covers the most common Excel functions [...] but doesn't have the power of Microsoft's offering". Marshall praised collaboration for being "effortless", and praised importing of external file formats and making those editable and collaborative for being a "big selling point".
  • PC Magazine's Eric Grevstad wrote that "what's online is what you get", adding that "configuring them to [work offline] is a rigmarole". He stated that the package was "an illustration of software's version of the 80/20 rule [...] 80 percent of users will never need more than 20 percent of the features". He stated that "comparing [G Suite] to Office 2016 is like bringing a handgun to a cannon fight [...] Microsoft's PC-based suite is designed to have almost every feature anyone might ever need; Google's online suite is designed to have most features most people use daily."
  • Tom's Hardware's James Gaskin wrote that "like most Google products, it can claim the cleanest and most minimal interface in the market", and "No other suite except Office 365 can get close to the ease of collaboration Google provides. And even Microsoft's product trails by a wide margin as changes only appear in real-time in Word 2016, not the other apps".
